Abstract

This dataset contains a gridded composite of vertically integrated bird densities over the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. For this dataset all operational weather radar data is used from these 3 countries. The composite is computed using BioRad and also reclassified to BIRDTAM values. Both the BIRDTAM values and the vertically integrated bird densities are stored in the dataset.

Lineage statement Volumetric data from radars in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands are fed to the bioRad opensource tool. This tool uses several radar variables to estimate a vertical profile of birds. This vertical profile is then applied to all reflectivity data within a distance of 80 km to the radar, to create an estimate of vertically integrated bird density. Note that, since this is applied to all reflectivity data, also precipitation and other sources of reflectivity will be converted to bird density values. Typically it is assumed that BIRDTAM values of 9 or higher are due to precipitation or other sources and not ornithological.
